May God be gracious to us and bless us
and make his face to shine upon us,
that your way may be known on earth,
your saving power among all nations.
Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you! Psalm 67:1-3 (ESV)
Hidden in the midst of Psalm 67 is the prophecy of Christ. God would be gracious to us in the sending of His Son. In Jesus, God’s face has shone and continues to shine upon us. Jesus has made known the way of God in His preaching and miraculous signs. His power to save has been perfectly given for us through the lowliness of a cross. God’s great might is fully asserted via suffering and death. Only the believer trusts that the cross, an instrument of death, has the power to save. In this way, the Father has sent forth His Son as a redeeming sacrifice for sinners. This is good news in a fallen world. Sin, death, and the power of the devil has no power over those who have been saved by Christ.
